Intumescent Coating (Fire Proofing Coating)

Passive fire protection for structural steel and timber. Engineered coatings that protect your building, your people, and your compliance.

Professional Intumescent Coating Solutions

Intumescent coatings are a specialised form of passive fire protection. Applied like paint, they remain thin and unobtrusive under normal conditions. When exposed to extreme heat, the coating expands up to 50 times its original thickness, forming an insulating char layer that shields structural steel and timber from fire.
This buys the most valuable thing in a fire: time. Time for occupants to evacuate, time for emergency services to respond, and time before structural elements lose their load-bearing capacity.
At ST Coatings, we supply and apply certified intumescent coating systems for commercial, industrial, and multi-unit residential projects across Auckland and the wider region.

Why intumescent coatings ?

Compliance with the NZ Building Code

Structural steel must achieve specified Fire Resistance Ratings (FRR) under the Building Code. Intumescent coatings are a proven, certifiable way to meet 30, 60, 90, and 120 minute ratings.

Protection without bulk

Unlike board systems or sprayed fireproofing, intumescent coatings add only millimetres to the steel profile. Architectural steelwork stays visible and clean.

A finished look

Intumescent systems can be top-coated in a wide range of colours, so fire protection doubles as your decorative finish.

Interior and exterior systems

We apply both thin-film systems for internal steel and durable systems rated for exposed or semi-exposed environments.

Our Process

Step 01

Assessment and specification

We review your fire engineering requirements, steel sections, and required FRR, then specify the right coating system and dry film thickness.

Step 02

Surface preparation

Correct preparation and priming is critical to performance. We prepare all substrates to the coating manufacturer's specification.

Step 03

Application

Our applicators apply the system to the specified thickness, with wet and dry film measurements taken throughout.

Step 04

QA and certification

We provide full documentation of film thickness readings and product batch records to support your producer statements and council sign-off.
